The story of RAF 151 Wing
Hurricanes to Murmansk, supported by the RAF Historical Society, is the story of 151 Wing, a secret RAF detachment sent by Churchill on the first Arctic Convoy in 1941 in response to Hitler’s invasion of Russia.
RAF Hawker Hurricane pilots would defend the key North Russian port of Murmansk from German aerial attack and secure the vital supply route for future British and U.S wartime aid convoys.
The discovery in June 2023 near Kyiv of buried debris from Hurricane aircraft damaged in WW2 combat, links present day Ukraine to the 1941 Anglo-Russian alliance to defend the wider Soviet Union. Cold War politics denied the presence of the RAF on the Eastern Front for nearly 70 years. This film tells their story with unique archive and stills, and comment from Antony Beevor and Richard Overy.
The last RAF veteran of this operation has now died aged 102.
